Transport Ministry Seeks to Extend 40-Baht Red and Purple Line Fare Cap to End of 2027
Cities:Bangkok
Bangkok’s 40-baht-a-day flat fare on the SRT Red Line and MRTA Purple Line, in place since December 1, 2025, is due to expire on November 30, 2026. The Transport Ministry has now asked the Cabinet to extend the scheme by roughly a year and a month, through December 31, 2027, according to Nation Thailand and Bangkok Post. Cabinet approval has not yet been confirmed.
The ministry’s case for the extension rests on ridership: Thai PBS reports the Purple Line is now carrying an average of 72,000 passengers a day and the Red Line 40,000, both up since the flat fare was introduced. The 40-baht cap is a separate, narrower scheme from the wider 17–45 baht common-ticketing plan planned across all of Bangkok’s electric rail lines from January 2027 — officials expect the Red and Purple Line cap to keep running alongside that broader scheme while it is rolled out.
Regular users of the Red and Purple lines should watch for the Cabinet’s decision in the coming weeks; if approved, the 40-baht fare continues uninterrupted past its current end date, but if not, fares on both lines would revert to their standard, higher structure on December 1.
