Bangkok's Combined Rail Fares to Be Capped at 45 Baht From January 2027

Cities:Bangkok

Thailand’s Transport Ministry plans to launch a common-ticketing scheme across Bangkok’s electric rail network on January 1, 2027. Under the plan, boarding any participating line costs no more than 17 baht, and the total fare for a single journey — including transfers between different lines — is capped at 45 baht, with no extra boarding charge when switching operators.

Combined fares on some cross-line journeys currently run as high as 65 baht, so the cap would cut costs for riders who transfer between lines run by different operators. Where a rider’s normal combined fare exceeds 45 baht, the state-run Mass Rapid Transit Authority, working with Krungthai Bank’s payment system, would refund the difference to the rider’s Pao Tang app or payment card within three working days. Because the fund set up for common ticketing has no reserves of its own, the scheme is expected to need a central budget subsidy of roughly 5 billion baht a year to cover the gap.

The main hurdle before launch is integrating the BTS Skytrain’s Rabbit card payment system with the common platform; the ministry has set November 2026 to finish the legal and administrative groundwork, with testing planned for December. Commuters and visitors who rely on Bangkok’s trains should treat January 1 as the target date rather than a certainty, and watch for confirmation closer to year-end.
