Thai Banks Now Routinely Turn Away Tourists and DTV Holders Opening New Accounts
Opening a Thai bank account has become significantly harder for anyone without a long-stay visa. Bangkok Bank no longer opens new deposit accounts for foreign tourists, and its accepted categories are now built around retirement and non-immigrant visas, marriage to a Thai national, or documented property ownership such as a condo title or signed sale-and-purchase agreement. Banks say the tightening is meant to curb “mule accounts” used in financial scams, and the same restrictions now extend to credit card and mobile banking sign-ups.
The change lands hardest on the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), introduced to attract digital nomads and long-stay visitors on a flexible basis. Despite allowing stays of up to 180 days, the DTV is classified by bank compliance teams as a tourist-linked visa, and by early 2026 both Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank had aligned their policies to exclude it from new savings accounts. Kasikorn’s own terms state plainly that accounts are not opened for holders of tourist visas, visas-on-arrival or exemption stamps. Holders of the Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa and the Thailand Privilege (Elite) visa face no such barrier and remain the most reliably accepted categories.
For anyone comparing visa options to live in Thailand longer-term, this is now a real practical difference between routes that look similar on paper: a DTV grants a long stay but not reliable access to a Thai bank account, while a retirement or non-immigrant visa generally does both. Banks have also tightened supporting paperwork across the board — passports must have at least six months’ validity and are now scanned rather than photocopied, and a Certificate of Residence backed by a landlord’s TM30 filing is treated as the strongest proof of address.
