Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

Current · Last updated 22/09/2026

Who can apply

The DTV has three separate tracks. Workcation (DTV1) — digital nomads, remote workers, foreign talent and freelancers working for an employer or clients outside Thailand. Soft power activities (DTV2) — people coming for Thai soft-power activities such as Muaythai training or Thai culinary courses, and people coming for medical treatment. Dependants (DTV3) — the spouse and children under 20 of a DTV holder. Every track requires the same 500,000 THB financial evidence, including dependants.

Current requirements

Multiple entry, with the visa valid for five years. Financial evidence of no less than 500,000 THB — bank statements or a sponsorship letter. The detailed embassy checklist puts this as a three-month bank statement with a closing balance at or above that figure. Since 31 August 2026 applicants must also show proof of permanent residence and a criminal record clearance certificate, replacing the earlier requirement to prove only current location. See the changes log for what exactly changed and how embassies are interpreting it differently. All supporting documents must be supplied in English or Thai.

Documents you need

Common to all tracks: passport biodata page, a photograph taken within the last six months, a completed application form, and the financial evidence above. Workcation adds: an employment contract or employment certificate from your own country, or a professional portfolio evidencing digital nomad, remote worker, foreign talent or freelancer status. The detailed checklist also asks for six months of salary slips or proof of monthly income, and for the employment certificate and the company's registration or business licence to be authenticated by the embassy of the country where that company is based. Soft power adds: proof of confirmation to attend the activity, a letter of acceptance from the institute or company organising it, or a letter of appointment from the hospital or medical centre. Dependants add: the main holder's DTV, proof of the relationship such as a marriage, birth or adoption certificate, and the main holder's income evidence.

What it costs

The application fee is set by each embassy in local currency, so there is no single worldwide figure — check the fee page of the mission handling your case. The Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo, as an example of the structure, charges the DTV at the same rate as a ten-year O-X and twice the rate of a one-year multiple-entry Non-Immigrant visa. Fees are paid within the e-Visa system by Visa or Mastercard only, and are non-refundable even if the application is refused. The real financial bar is the 500,000 THB you must evidence, which is required per applicant including spouses and children.

Where to apply

Through Thailand's official e-Visa system at thaievisa.go.th, to the Thai embassy or consulate covering your place of residence. Since the August 2026 change this matters more than it used to: you are expected to apply where you hold residence, not at whichever mission looks fastest. Embassies have published noticeably different readings of what counts as proof of residence, so check the specific requirements of the mission you intend to use. Submitting an application is not a guarantee of approval, and the embassy may request an interview or further documents.

The DTV is the closest thing Thailand has to a digital-nomad visa: five years, multiple entry, and no work permit needed because the work is for clients and employers outside the country.

The tightening that took effect on 31 August 2026 is the part to pay attention to, because it closed the practice of applying through whichever embassy happened to be quickest. The details, including how individual missions are reading the new residence requirement, are in the changes log.
