Sart Duan Sip

Nakhon Si Thammarat, southern Thailand

No confirmed date for a specific year yet — this event usually falls in September, see below.

The most important festival of the south. Belief has it that ancestors who sinned sit in hell as "pret" — spirits with huge bellies and tiny mouths, eternally hungry. Once a year they are released into the world of the living to get food from their descendants. Families carry decorated trays of offerings to the temple. It lasts about two weeks, sometimes spilling into October.

Meaning

A merit-making festival for feeding ancestors believed to be suffering in hell, released once a year to seek food from their descendants.
