The most important festival of the south. Belief has it that ancestors who sinned sit in hell as "pret" — spirits with huge bellies and tiny mouths, eternally hungry. Once a year they are released into the world of the living to get food from their descendants. Families carry decorated trays of offerings to the temple. It lasts about two weeks, sometimes spilling into October. In 2026 the Nakhon Si Thammarat Sart Duean Sip Tradition and Red Cross Fair runs 28 September to 12 October, centred on Wat Phra Mahathat and Thung Tha Lat park in Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat district.
