Khao Phansa, the start of the monks' three-month retreat during the rainy season. Before there was electricity, people donated candles to the temples so the monks would have light to study by. From this grew eight-metre wax sculptures that temples spend months making, competing over whose is better. The 2026 parade was on 30 July. Next year's dates are not listed yet: Khao Phansa follows the lunar calendar and its exact date is only fixed when the Thai Cabinet publishes the official holiday list for the year, which happens a few months ahead.
