Songkran
Nationwide
No confirmed date for a specific year yet — this event usually falls in April, see below.
April 13–15, in many places longer. The water isn't a game, it's washing away the old year: sins, bad luck, bad karma. At home, the younger generation pours scented water over the hands of parents and grandparents, asking for a blessing. The bucket in the street is an expanded version of this gesture. UNESCO added Songkran to its intangible heritage list in 2023.
Meaning
The Thai New Year, a nationwide water festival symbolising the washing away of the old year's misfortune and a blessing ritual for elders.
